ZimaBoard Starter Pack excellent!

I finally got the ZimaBoard Starter Pack and I'm so glad I did! I was looking for a personal cloud solution for ages, and this really hit the mark. Everything in the kit was super useful, especially the SATA Cable for ZimaBoard. The board itself is powerful enough for my home lab projects. I even got Plex running on it with no issues. Shipping took about a week to get to me in California, which wasn't bad. I'm already thinking about getting a ZimaCube next. Definitely will shop here again!

My ZimaBoard's RAM is feeling a bit tight for all the services I'm running. Can I upgrade the RAM on a ZimaBoard?

Unfortunately, no. The RAM on ZimaBoards is soldered directly onto the board. You can't upgrade it after purchase. You have to pick the model with the RAM you need from the start.

Yeah, the ZimaOS installation can be a bit finicky on non-Zima hardware. I had issues with detecting my NVMe. Make sure your BIOS is set to legacy boot if you're having trouble.

What's the real difference between ZimaBoard and ZimaBlade? I'm looking for a basic home assistant setup.

ZimaBoard is more of a single board computer, like a Raspberry Pi alternative but with SATA. ZimaBlade is smaller, designed more for edge computing or as a compute module, less I/O. For home assistant, ZimaBoard is generally better if you need more direct connectivity or storage expansion.

I use a ZimaBoard 216 for Home Assistant with a couple of Docker containers and it runs perfectly. The SATA ports are a big plus for adding storage.

Thinking of grabbing a ZimaCube instead of a Synology. Anyone have experience with both? Is the ZimaCube actually a good alternative for media and stuff?

Totally. I had a Synology DS218+ before and the ZimaCube is way more flexible. You gotta be a bit more hands-on with ZimaOS but the performance is better for the price imo.

I wouldn't say it's a direct replacement for everyone. Synology is more plug and play. ZimaCube is great if you want to tinker more and customize, especially with the PCIe slots. For just media, it's probably overkill unless you're doing 4k transcodes.
